You’re having a head massage, and before you know it, you’re drifting off.
Many of you have probably had that experience.
At La HEAD, too, it is not unusual for guests to fall asleep during their treatment.
As your head is touched slowly and gently, you close your eyes, let your body go, and little by little, drowsiness sets in.
So what is the actual relationship between head massage and sleep?
In 2026, a new study was published that looked at sleep and care that included head and face massage.
2026: A Study of Head and Face Massage and Sleep
The September 2026 issue of the medical journal Complementary Therapies in Medicine published a randomized controlled trial examining the effect on sleep of an intervention combining head and face massage with aromatherapy .
The participants were patients hospitalized in a CCU (coronary care unit) after an acute myocardial infarction (heart attack).
In the study, the patients received care that included head and face massage, and their sleep was then evaluated.
The researchers reported that, in the group that received the intervention, measures of sleep quality showed improvement .
It is interesting that head massage is being studied not just as something that “feels nice in the moment,” but in relation to sleep as well .
Because It Was a Hospital Study, the Results Need Careful Interpretation
At the same time, there is an important caveat to this study.
The participants were not healthy, ordinary adults, but patients hospitalized in a CCU after an acute heart attack .
A hospital stay is a very different environment from everyday life.
The sounds of medical equipment, the lighting, treatment, physical strain and psychological anxiety are just some of the many things that can disturb sleep.
So from this study alone, we cannot generalize that
“Anyone will sleep well if they get a head massage,”
or that
“Dry head spa treatments improve sleep.”
That kind of generalization simply isn’t possible.
These results should be understood as findings from a specific medical setting.
Even so, the very fact that care involving touch to the head and face is being studied medically in relation to sleep and rest is an interesting theme that may lead to further research.
Touch to the Head Is Also Being Studied in the Brain
Head massage is also being researched from angles other than sleep.
A scoping review published in the Journal of Clinical Medicine in 2026 brought together 47 studies that examined brain activity during massage using EEG (electroencephalography), fMRI, fNIRS and other methods.
Results varied from study to study, but some EEG studies reported changes in brain activity during massage associated with a relaxed state, such as an increase in alpha waves and decreased activity in the beta and gamma bands .
Studies using fMRI have also reported changes in activity in brain regions involved in sensation and emotion, such as the insula and the anterior cingulate cortex.
However, none of this proves that “massage rests the brain” or that “massage improves sleep.”
Because the research methods, participants and types of massage all differ, it is fairest to say that, for now, researchers are gradually exploring what changes take place in the brain and body during massage .
Sleep Is Not the Only Purpose of a Head Massage
When it comes to a dry head spa,
“Am I supposed to fall asleep during the treatment?”
some guests wonder.
At La HEAD, however, falling asleep is not the goal of the treatment.
Whether you sleep or stay awake, either is perfectly fine.
For a while, you step away from the mind you keep using all day for work, your smartphone and your thoughts, close your eyes, and let your body rest.
There is nothing to decide, and even if someone messages you, there’s no need to check.
What we value is that “time when you don’t have to do anything” itself .
Drifting off, or staying awake and simply enjoying how good it feels, are both lovely ways to spend your time with us that day.
At La HEAD: Not Just the Head, but the Neck, Shoulders and Arms Too
A dry head spa at La HEAD doesn’t end with the head alone.
We think of the head, neck, shoulders and arms as one connected whole, and care for each with attention.
In addition, our SIGNATURE COURSE , designed for an even more refined experience, includes natural aromatherapy scents, a warm eye mask, magnesium gel and more.
After your treatment, a private refresh room is ready for you.
Rather than rushing straight back into daily life the moment your treatment ends, you can take your time and savor the afterglow.
The research introduced here did not study the effects of La HEAD’s treatments, nor does it guarantee better sleep.
Even so, the relationship between head massage and sleep and rest is gradually becoming a subject of scientific study , and we find that fascinating.
For the days when you feel your mind has been working nonstop at work or in daily life.
Close your eyes in a quiet, fully private room and let your head, neck, shoulders and arms rest.
Rather than trying hard to fall asleep, first make time to do nothing at all.
Spend a luxurious moment of rest with us at La HEAD.
