Still Tired After Sleeping? It Might Be "Brain Fatigue"

“I should have slept well, but I’m still tired.”

“I can’t stay focused at work.”

“My head feels heavy and foggy.”

Do you ever feel this way?

In fact, one survey found that about one in two people in their 30s to 50s feel that their head has been tired or heavy lately.

Among people who use a computer for six or more hours a day, that figure was reported to exceed 60%.

Living surrounded by information as we do today, more and more people may be feeling not just physical tiredness but “brain fatigue.”

In this article, we explain what brain fatigue is, what causes it and what you can do about it.

What Is Brain Fatigue?

Brain fatigue refers to a state in which the brain can’t get enough rest, and fatigue builds up, due to long hours of desk work, smartphone use, information overload, stress and so on.

These days we keep taking in information from our smartphones not only at work but also while commuting and at home.

Because the brain is constantly processing information, it may not be getting enough rest even when the body is.

Do You Have Any of These Symptoms?

When brain fatigue builds up, you may notice problems like these:

• still tired after sleeping
• a heavy feeling in the head
• trouble staying focused
• getting irritated easily
• light, shallow sleep
• a vague lack of motivation

Of course, these symptoms can have many causes, so not all of them are necessarily due to brain fatigue.

However, the same survey also reported that about 60% of people noticed changes such as reduced concentration or slower information processing.

If you feel you can’t focus on work as well as you used to, strain may be building up in your brain without your realizing it.

Time to Rest Your Brain Matters Too

When our bodies are tired, we try to rest, but brain fatigue is much harder to notice.

As a result, many people keep pushing themselves, thinking they can still keep going.

But feeling tired is by no means a matter of attitude or lack of effort.

In today’s world, where we’re exposed to so much information all day long through work and smartphones, strain can accumulate in the brain without our noticing.

That’s why, instead of forcing yourself to keep going, it’s important to pause and make time to let your brain rest.

Consciously building relaxing moments into your daily life, such as getting morning sunlight, exercising moderately, spending less time on your smartphone or taking a long, leisurely bath, helps refresh both mind and body.
